JAKARTA - China's e-commerce platform Shein has been re-launched in India through a partnership with the retail network of local conglomerate Reliance, after nearly five years of the application being banned from operating.

In 2020, the Indian government banned 59 Chinese-owned applications, including TikTok, ShareIt, UC Browser, Likee, WeChat, Shein, and Bigo Live to operate in their country, due to national security concerns.

Under the ban, India accused Shein of secretly collecting user data and sending it to servers in China. The Indian government is concerned that the data is being used for unwanted purposes, such as espionage or surveillance.

However, with this new partnership, Shein's new application, now named Shein India Fast Fashion, was developed and launched by billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Retail.

According to TechCrunch, based on the partnership structure revealed recently by India's trading ministry, Shein will operate purely as a technology partner, with Reliance retaining full ownership of the platform through its subsidiary.

The arrangement requires all customer data to be stored in India, and Shein does not have access to the customer data.

India's Minister of Trade, Piyush Goyal recently said that Shein's approval process involved a thorough examination by several ministries, including IT and Domestic Affairs.
