Off The Captain's Tires, Jordan Henderson Triggers Future Speculation In Ajax

JAKARTA - Speculation regarding Jordan Henderson's future emerged after he was not wearing a armband for the Europa League match against Galatasaray on Friday, January 31, 2025, early morning WIB.

However, the rumors were immediately denied by Ajax's manager, Francesco Farioli, who was angry with the question of the 34-year-old.

He also confirmed Henderson would not leave Ajax in the winter transfer market despite offers from Monaco.

The Ligue 1 club is working hard to recruit the veteran midfielder. Henderson initially wanted to move, but he had agreed to stay until the end of the season.

Farioli also intends to defend the former Liverpool captain even though Ajax is experiencing financial problems.

Henderson, who has captained giant Eredivisie since February 2024, gave the captain's armband to goalkeeper Remko Pasveer before Ajax beat Galatasaray 2-1 to qualify for the play off of the Europa League knockout.

"Every 45 minutes there is news and something appears. Henderson proved himself today as a great and professional player. He played very well," said Farioli.

Farioli further joked about Henderson's situation not wearing the captain's armband.

"Maybe he's a little lighter now," he said.

Henderson did not speak to the media after the game, but goalkeeping coach Remko Pasveer said the midfielder wanted to focus on the game, not the rumors.

"Jordan wants to focus on the game and not on things that are not important. It was discussed before the game."

"He doesn't want this about him, but about the game. It's good that I can replace him."

"That way we support each other. If he feels happy with this, then that's the best we can do," Pasveer told Ziggo Sport.

Henderson was Liverpool captain from 2015 to 2023 before surprising joining Saudi Arabia's Pro League club, Al Ettikaq.

After only 17 appearances, he signed a contract with Ajax, where he has performed 26 times. He has also represented the England National Team 81 times and scored three goals.

Ajax is in second place in the Eredivisie 2024/2025. They will also fight for Europa League last 16 tickets against Union SG in the playoffs.
