Mount Marapi Erupsi Launches Volcanic Ash As High As 600 Meters

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) through the West Sumatra Volcano Observation Post reported that Mount Marapi erupted again by throwing volcanic ash as high as 600 meters.

"There has been an eruption of Mount Marapi on June 10, 2024 at 11.26 WIB with a column height of ash observed about 600 meters above the peak, or 3,491 meters above sea level," said observations officer Mount Marapi Teguh in Padang as reported by ANTARA, Monday, June 10.

Teguh explained, the ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity leaning towards the northwest. This eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of two millimeters, with a temporary duration of about 46 seconds.

Currently, the volcano in Agam Regency and Tanah Datar Regency is at level III (standby) status.

PVMBG has issued a number of recommendations, including prohibiting the public, visitors or tourists from entering or carrying out activities within a radius of 4.5 kilometers from the eruption center (Verbeek Luxury).

Then, people living around the valley, rivers or banks that head up at the top of Mount Marapi are asked to always be aware of the potential threat of lava that can occur, especially during the rainy season.

"If there is ash rain, the public is advised to use a mask covering the nose and mouth to avoid respiratory tract disturbances," he said.

Previously, on the same day at 08.42 WIB PVMBG through the local PGA also recorded an eruption of Mount Marapi with a column height of ash about 750 meters above the peak.

The ash column is observed to be gray with thin to moderate intensity and leaning towards the southwest. This eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 2.9 millimeters, and a temporary duration of 2 minutes 36 seconds.
