JAKARTA - The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) revealed that it is conducting a study on the impact of Indonesia which has officially become a member of the Brazilian, Russian, Indian, Chinese and South African organizations (BRICS) in the industrial sector.

"We are still in the assessment stage. We are still in the process of being assessed," said Ministry of Industry spokesman Febri Hendri Antoni Arief as quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, January 30.

Even now, his party is still exploring the negative and positive impacts of the economic group that plays a role in the global economy.

As previously reported, the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs (Menlu) Sugiono stated that Indonesia's participation in the BRICS economic bloc, in addition to raising economic benefits, is also an effort to bridge differences in the interests of developed and developing countries in various multilateral forums.

"Indonesia wants to gather cooperation and collaboration with neighboring countries, friendly countries in the region, and the global community," said the Indonesian Foreign Minister.

According to a written statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) in Jakarta, Saturday, Sugiono said, Indonesia always advances a constructive approach to Indonesia's collaboration at the global level, including through participation in BRICS.

He said that Indonesian diplomacy under President Prabowo Subianto would be directed to realize Indonesia's sovereignty and welfare for the people as mandated by the 1945 Constitution.

BRICS members control 40 percent of the world's population and 35 percent of global gross domestic product (GDP), making it an important player in the international arena.

Standing in 2009 with the original Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa members, BRICS now has more and more members after 13 new countries were designated partner countries in October 2024.

Apart from Indonesia, BRICS also welcomes three other Southeast Asian countries as new members, namely Malaysia, Vietnam, and Thailand.
