PLN Calls Green Electricity Service Up 117 Percent In 2024

PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (Persero) stated that the Green as a Service (GEAS) Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) service was enjoyed by 7,354 customers or grew 117 percent in 2024 compared to the previous year which was 3,378 customers.

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo stated that REC is a solution for the industrial and business sectors to obtain reliable and affordable green electricity.

Along with the times, he said, demand for products produced through clean energy is an important factor in maintaining industrial competitiveness.

"As the backbone of the national EBT provider, PLN is committed to increasing industrial competitiveness by providing green electricity services that are 100 percent supplied by our EBT generators through the REC. We are ready to serve green electricity needs for the business sector and," Darmawan quoted Antara as saying.

REC is one of PLN's innovation green product instruments to make it easier for customers to gain recognition for the transparent, accountable and internationally recognized use of new renewable energy (EBT). REC PLN validates that electricity production per megawatt hour (MWh) used by customers comes from verified green electricity.

Darmawan said that since its launch in 2020, REC sales have continued to record significant growth of 10.99 terawatt hour (TWh) until 2024. Of the total sales, 49 percent was achieved in 2024 or 5.38 TWh, an increase compared to 2023 which was 3.54 TWh or was able to grow 52 percent (yoy). This is inseparable from the increasing interest of customers, especially in the business and industrial sectors towards REC.

He revealed that company customers such as Nike, PT Cheil Jedang Indonesia, PTaturmas Chemical, PT Agincourt Resources, PT Indah Klat Pulp & Paper Tbk, PT Air Liquide Indonesia, PT South Pacific Viscose, PT Sorini Agro Asia Corporindo, PT Smelting, and PT Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia became the largest REC connoisseurs with a total capacity of 2.81 TWh or about 52 percent of the total capacity used in 2024.

According to him, the high trend of customer interest in the industrial and business sector in green electricity services REC this year is predicted to increase in the following year.

"The more large companies, both from within and outside the country, entrust their green electricity supply with the PLN REC. So, we are optimistic that this green electricity service will continue to grow," he said.

Furthermore, Darmawan explained that currently there are 8 PLN power plants that have supplied green electricity for REC customers.

The eight plants are the Kamojang Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP), PLTP Ulubelu, PLTP Lahendong, PLTP Ulumbu, Cirata Hydroelectric Power Plant (PLTA), PLTA Baku, PLTA Orya Genyem, and Lambur Minihidro Power Plant (PLTM).

"REC provides assurances for the use of EBT in a transparent and internationally recognized manner. Each REC certificate ensures that the electricity used by customers comes from an EBT or non-fossil generator, with an APX Tradable Instrument for Global Renewables (TIGRs) tracking system from the United States which ensures that the certificate meets international standards," said Darmawan.
