The Jakarta Provincial Government Modified Today To Overcome Extreme Weather

The Jakarta Provincial Government will carry out modifications to overcome extreme weather (doc. PPID).

JAKARTA - The Jakarta Provincial Government carried out a weather modification operation today, Saturday, February 1, until Thursday, February 6, 2025. This step was taken to respond to extreme weather that has the potential to cause moderate to heavy rain.

"BMKG has issued a warning about the potential for rainy weather that can occur until February 6," said Jakarta Governor Teguh Setyabudi, in his statement, Saturday, February 1, 2025.

This weather modification operation (OMC) is centered at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport. The aircraft used is a Cesna type belonging to the Indonesian Air Force.

The number of flights carried out will consider the BMKG Weather Forecaster & Flight Scientist. This activity will be carried out from 07.00 WIB to 17.00 WIB.

This weather modification operation is supervised by BMKG and the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). The goal is that its implementation does not interfere with commercial and military flights.

"With this OMC implementation, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government hopes to minimize disaster risk due to extreme weather that is predicted to hit the Jakarta area," said Secretary of the Regional Disaster Management Agency, Marulitua Sijabat.

"OMC aims to change the rainfall pattern so that it can reduce the intensity of rain that occurs in a short time," he said.

With less rainfall, the potential for inundation and flooding in the Jakarta area can be minimized.

"OMC is part of a wider disaster mitigation effort," said Marulitua.

This kind of operation has also been carried out by the Jakarta Provincial Government on December 25-31, 2024. This method is effective in reducing the intensity of rain and mitigating the risk of hydrometeorological disasters.

Rainfall at that time fell by 38 percent based on GSMAP satellite data and 28 percent based on predictions models. This operation was carried out by 10 flight sorties and salt seeding to clouds totaling 19 hours 36 minutes.
